Frank Biermann appointed as academic director, MSc Environment and Resource Management
Frank Biermann has been appointed per 1 October 2012 as academic director of IVM’s flagship teaching programme, the international MSc “Environment and Resource Management” (ERM). This one-year programme is designed to give students a multidisciplinary theoretical understanding of environmental issues as well as a thorough grasp of different tools to assess environmental problems.
ERM offers students four compulsory courses, introducing sustainability and growth, environmental economics, environmental policy and governance, and tools for environmental research. The programme also gives students the choice of four specializations: Energy Studies; Climate and Water Policy; Eco-system Services and Biodiversity; and Environmental Studies.
Professor Biermann is professor of Environmental Policy Sciences and of Political Science at the VU University Amsterdam, where he also heads the department of Environmental Policy Analysis. Internationally, Biermann is active, among others, as chair of the global research network “Earth System Governance Project”. He also serves as general director of the Netherlands Research School for Socio-economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment.
Biermann succeeds in this function Professor Joyeeta Gupta, who has built up the “ERM” in the last six years to an internationally well-received programme that attracts each year over 70-100 students to the VU University Amsterdam. Professor Gupta is leaving the VU University Amsterdam per 1 January 2013 to join the University of Amsterdam’s department of social geography.
