The four IVM environmental ‘integrating themes' (water, energy, ecosystems, and climate) are used to embed interdisciplinary research at IVM, to promote pioneering research through new combinations and thereby to foster the excellence of our science and our societal impact. The research projects and teaching programs of IVM have been designed to steer future research priorities of IVM and to present a coherent profile of the institute’s work to our diverse audiences and partners.

All topic areas are related to issues of primary importance in the environmental policy of the EU as outlined in, for example, the Horizon 2020 research program. The same topics are also included in the teaching programs of IVM in its two Master's degrees (MSc): Environment and Resource Management (ERM), and Hydrology.
