Brenden has been employed at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) since January 2011. He is currently a researcher with the Water and Climate Risk group, where his research focuses on flood risk, climate change adaptation, development and the use of crowd-sourced data in disaster risk management. He also works at the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

Brenden is involved in a range of projects dealing with adaptation to climate risks. During his time at the IVM, he completed his PhD thesis in which he developed new methods for the quantification of flood risk and the assessment of adaptation options from local to global scales. He is one of the developers the state-of-the-art global flood risk assessment model GLOFRIS, and worked on flood risk related projects with a range of stakeholders and decision makers, including the World Bank, Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, European Commission Joint Research Centre, and large reinsurance companies. His latest research focuses on the use of weather forecasting and social media information for improving the preparedness and rapid response to climate related disasters.

Brenden has been an invited speaker at several universities, international organisations and major international conferences. He has authored over 15 peer-reviewed journal papers; is involved in BSc and MSc teaching; and is a reviewer for a large number of leading international journals related to water, climate and disaster risk management.
